While being subcontracted by companies that were supplying this type of service to the shipping industry, we recognized the potential to create a professional service that would be beneficial to the shipping industry.
We created an efficient stowaway search service for shipping companies and agents to utilize and improved working conditions for our employee’s and others that were involved in this profession.

We are dedicated to improving this industry and will continue to make positive improvements for the shipping industry and our employee’s. While being subcontracted by companies that were supplying this type of service to the shipping industry, we recognized the potential to create a professional service that would be beneficial to the shipping industry. We were not in a financial position to accept the challenge and Robert remained in this profession to continue learning how this profession could be improved. At the end of 2007, an unfortunate incident which caused the death of a colleague who was exposed to methane gas and died of asphyxiation caused immense concern that this line of work had to be improved as people doing this type of work had being doing so with no safety equipment and very little knowledge of the dangers that are associated with it. Fortunately at this stage, Gerrit was in a financial position and our earlier intentions were able to become a reality. We were operational under the company name of Boland Security maritime division during the first half of 2008 while our own company registration was being processed. By having our own company we were able to bring positive changes and set the example so that other companies would follow, taking this line of work to the next level. Our focus was on educating the shipping agents about the dangers that people were faced with while doing this type of work. Companies that did not supply any safety equipment to their employees were placing their employees at unnecessary risk. Agents started supporting this new approach within 3 months and other companies were either forced to make positive changes or leave this type of work to the people that were doing it for the right reasons. We created an efficient stowaway search service for shipping companies and agents to utilize and improved working conditions for our employee’s and others that were involved in this profession. Our approach started to spread to other harbours in South Africa as agents saw that this was a huge improvement compared to how stowaway searches were conducted in the past. Unfortunately, deaths are still occurring and employer ignorance is largely to blame for this especially where an employer refuses to supply their search teams with safety equipment and information concerning the dangers associated with a stowaway search.
